I got an email the other day from a tech colleague about a blog post written by a 19 year old college student named Andrew, about social media use. The post blew up and he's caused quite a stir with his blunt assessments of all the different platforms and how they're used by him and his peers.
Read his post and elaborate on the social media platforms you use. Do you and your peers feel the same way about the apps he discussed?
I actually enjoyed this blog post because most of what he said is true. I agree with him the most about Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Snapchat. Instagram is my favorite app to use. I have Facebook but really all I do on Facebook is re-share photos and videos, and "...just throw up everything we got so people can tag each other and show our family members that we're still alive." I had a Twitter but I deleted it because I thought it was pointless, too. I like Snapchat too because "Snapchat is a somewhat intimate network of friends who I don't care if they see me at a party having fun." I use Kik also just because it's easier & faster to send messages, and you can see whether or not the person has read or hasn't even received your message yet. I've heard of the other apps but I don't use them nor will I probably, but I think the ones I've mentioned and use are the most common. I think Vine should have been mentioned too because that's also a commonly used app. I have it and I think it's hysterical.
ReplyDeleteInteresting Emily. Sounds like a lot of work keeping up with all these different platforms.
DeleteFacebook: I agree with Andrew & Emily. Facebook was cool when you were younger but it got old. That being said it also kind of a standard to have ".. if you don't have Facebook, that’s even more weird and annoying". I don't have the need to go on their except to look at things my friends have shared with me. I know FB is an innovator for many of the social media sites today & its founder Mark Zuckerberg is an inspiration for getting rich and achieving success w/o receiving a college degree but it has gotten annoying and creepy. It's annoying b/c I get notifications about someone updating their status in my email & people try to show of on how many friends they have yet they only talk to about 10-20 on a regular basis. FB also has this follower/following thing that doesn't work for its website and it's creepy because FB has changed the privacy settings. This may all seem negative but there are some positive things about FB. For example, the messaging and reconnecting with people
ReplyDeleteAfter reading the "A Teenager's View on Social Media" blog post, I completely agree with what the student has said regarding the types of social media out there in our world today. Although I do not use Facebook and never have, I have realized over the past couple of years that it has been fallen down the social media ladder a lot due to its other competitors, such as Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, etc. I do feel that Facebook is an excellent way to reconnect with friends that you haven't seen in years and to keep in touch with family that may live in a completely different country. However, I feel, in my personal opinion, that Snapchat may be the worst social media source out there. Like the college student pointed out: How can you send a picture for just 10 seconds and then have it disappear forever? It doesn't happen; somebody has it somewhere and is using it for something. At least that is what I believe.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really socially active- if you will. I'm seriously an old women. Any of the social media accounts that I have is because my friends either forced me to make one or made one for me. Let me break it down. Facebook, I created one in 8th grade. I used it for a bit but stopped until about junior year of highschool. Its been about a year and I still havent checked on it but I dont want to delete it( I'm kind of a hoarder). If I do use it, Its to ocassionally stalk someone but not in the creepy way. Instagram, another account I was forced to create but I actually do like it. Twitter, I don't have one and I don't want one. I don't understand its purpose. Snapchat, I love it. Its fun and I dont have to put effort into what I get to post. Tumblr, don't have one and don't really care about having one, but if you ever need a pretty picture of anything just google image whatever you need a picture of and then add tumblr. For example, if you need a picture of a llama http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8vp6z66aW1rpnx9co1_500.jpg. I dont know what Yikyak or medium is. Anyway, I agree with most of what he had said.

ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed reading what Andrew had to say about social networks and I agree with him about what he says about them. Like Emily, Instagram is my favorite app to use. I use Instagram very often and I like it because I get to be myself on Instagram and I've actually met a lot of people on Instagram and made some really great friends. Instagram is mainly for my friends rather than my family which is why I also have Facebook. I mainly have Facebook for my family and really close friends. Every once in a while I would go and delete people off my Facebook that I'm not really close to anymore. I agree with what Andrew said about Facebook that many people are almost afraid to like or comment on someone else's picture because it might show up on their mom's profile or someone might screenshot it and bring it up when on Instagram you can freely like a picture or comment and it's no big deal which it shouldn't be. As for snapchat, I don't really use snapchat a lot but as Andrew said I will use it if I'm not a party or a special occasion and I want my close friends to see what I'm doing. I really don't believe that someone has these 10 second pictures saved somewhere because millions of people use this app they really don't have time or space to save all these pointless images of ourselves with "5 chins" as Andrew puts it. For kik, I only use kik to really interact with people I meet off instagram. Kik allows me to talk to the person and get to know them better without giving them my number. And for Whatsapp, I only use whatsapp to interact with my family and friends that live in Trinidad. Whatsapp is a fast, easy, and free way to talk to them internationally. As for the other social networks he mentioned, I don't use them nor have I ever had an account for them because I feel like I have enough social accounts and I don't need any more.
