Women in Technology

History is  written and hence distorted by those that are in power. Unfortunately the history of technology is no stranger to this notion. For instance, did you know that decades ago women were the early pioneers in computer programming: http://www.wnyc.org/story/the-forgotten-female-programmers-who-created-modern-tech/?utm_content=buffer45611&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

You are growing up in interesting times. There are more opportunities today for women than ever before. Problems still exist however, "In 2013, female full-time workers made only 78 cents for every dollar earned by men, a gender wage gap of 22 percent. http://www.iwpr.org/initiatives/pay-equity-and-discrimination

One of the biggest problems most tech companies face is that they do not have diverse work environments. Very few women go into tech today and companies like Google and Microsoft want to know why. http://readwrite.com/2014/09/02/women-in-computer-science-why-so-few

Please read one of the three articles and discuss. What was the major point of the article? What field are you interested in studying? Are women represented equally? Do you think if more women knew of women's contributions to the history of the computer, the might be more inclined to want to study Computer Science?

    1. The article I read was about the inequality of women in the work place. I think that it is ridiculous that in this day and age women are still inferior to men. I believe that we should be paid equally as men. We work as hard if not harder then men. I also can't believe that a person's gender should effect whether or not they should be hired. I think it should solely be based on whether or not they fulfill the job requirements.I also can't wait until the year 2050- something for women to finally be paid equally as men. This needs to change now!

  3. Well said Ana. It's amazing that in this day and age we still see such inequality and stubbornness to accept such a fundamental right and moral obligation to do the right thing.

  4. I also read the article about the inequality of women in the work place. I think it's unfair that women are STILL treated & seen differently from men. We're all human, we should all be treated equally.

  5. There are laws on the books that are supposed to prevent employers from discrimination based on gender. There is also a bill currently in Congress that is being stalled that would prohibit discrimination: https://www.congress.gov/bill/113th-congress/house-bill/438

  6. The article I read was about the inequality of women and how they are judged because they are women. Personally, I think it's ridiculous that women are not being treated equal to men. I think they should be treated based on their ability and capability to do the work rather than their gender.

  7. I read the article about women in the workplace. The first sentence of the article even says that women make up almost half of the world's workforce meanwhile they're getting paid less. I believe that if both men and women are working the same exact job, both genders should be paid the same amount. One should not get paid more than the other. I don't understand why women are so highly discriminated against by society when they are doing the same things as men. What's the big difference between men and women? I think that all men and women should be treated equally.

  8. The article about the inequality of women in the workplace is upsetting because women work so hard just to be noticed and it's not fair. How is it possible that a woman and a man can work the same job for the same amount of time but he gets paid more? It's not fair for women to still be inferior to men in 2014. A woman could have a better job than a man but he would still look superior to her. I think people should be judged on what abilities they apply to their jobs and how hard they work. Gender should not be the reason a person doesn't get credit for what they are doing. Employers should not discriminate anyone for any reason, whether it's race or gender.

  9. The article that I read was about the early pioneers of computer science such as Ada Lovelace and how she was ahead of her time with the idea of the computer science. I'm still not sure as to what major i want to be in but i see myself in an area of science. I don't think computer science pushes back women on purpose. Instead i think it's just the mentality.

  10. I read the article about pay equity & discrimination. The major purpose of this article was to shed light on the pay inequality that occurs between men and women in the workplace. It said that if we don't act on it soon it would take forever to get women equal pay. I would love to study in the field of business and would be crushed if I found out I was doing the same amount and quality of work a man was doing but getting paid less. I do not feel like women are represented equally in the workplace. They get praise here and then for being them but no one truly gives them the respect and rights they deserve. If more women knew about the history of computer science I do believe that more women would want to study computer science. I think it's time for a change in the field of computer science and it should start with more women.

  11. The article about the inequality of women in the work place was interesting to read about; the fact that women are still being judged in 2014 is surprising. Women and men are equal, both sexes are the same, there are obvious differences in physical appearance, but that has nothing to do with how you handle your work. It is 2014, most women are more successful then men, have better jobs then men, etc.
